8. "In our new home we want a focal feature... a really nice staircase". If there is space the simple straight flight staircase should be considered especially if care is taken in the balustrade (guarding to the side of the stair or galleried landing) detail and strings (side supports to the treads and risers of a stair). A bottom tread can be enhanced by forming a feature bottom tread, often referred to as a bullnose. Lighting should aim to give a good level of light into the steps. The diagram shows a series of different stair configurations to suit different spaces. The use of winders, i.e. diagonal steps changing direction, saves space. A spiral stair can be a particularly exciting feature. It is often better to keep a stair away from the walls so the whole structure can be appreciated. Keep the design simple and consider a glazed balustrade if costs permit.
