7. "We want a new kitchen !" The diagram shows different kitchen options and the importance of a good working arrangement between sink, cooker and fridge.

Farmhouse style kitchen. In the example a range cooker is included in an inglenook feature, the sink makes use of views out over the garden and the table position uses a bay window not only for additional space but also giving good views out. The utility room is adjacent and gives access out to the garden and garage.

The second illustration has similar features but uses a central table, it has a separate walk-in larder, a large square shaped bay allows space to accommodate an easy chair giving wonderful views down the garden especially by keeping the cill height low.

The conservatory kitchen. This arrangement provides good family space where children can play within the snug area. A bay window provides additional seating and everything is available from the working kitchen area. The conservatory provides space for informal dining, making maximum use of views across the garden. The conservatory arrangement provides an ideal chance to feel that one is living in the garden but remember they can get hot, noisy when it rains and creak in high winds.

Useful tips:

  • An open plan arrangement whereby the kitchen opens out into the lounge and dining area is a popular feature. Where space is limited it combines several functions into a simple, impressive space.
  • A breakfast bar can form a transition between kitchen and lounge / dining space. It also allows easy parental supervision of children but is not necessarily popular with everyone as the work in the kitchen is ‘on display’.
