5. "Our home needs a really nice drawing room or lounge"

The plan arrangement shows a new home with a drawing room wing. The lounge is orientated to make the most of afternoon and evening sunshine and views over the garden. There is an inglenook fireplace with small windows either side of the hearth to allow midday sunshine to come through into the space. The bay window provides additional seating and allows afternoon and evening sunshine to come in. A stable door provides access out via a covered verandah allowing the top half to be left open on a summer’s evening. Flexibility is provided between the drawing room and the dining room using sliding / folding doors allowing the rooms to be opened up and used as one.

Useful tips:

  • www.homedesign-online.co.uk Design kits are available in order to study different furniture arrangements within large reception rooms (see advertisement section). The kits can also be used in a new home to consider the best positions for plug points, lighting etc.
  • Think carefully about focal points. Consider a feature fireplace (see below).
  • Avoid clutter but make sure you provide enough furniture for your own and your guests’ needs.
  • Recessed wall features and niches are typical features of Regency style drawing rooms; they provide space for bookshelves, stereos, TVs etc.
