4. "I really want a special bathroom."

Design ideas:

  • A roof space converted into a bathroom.
  • Put the shower and bath on a plinth to accommodate the waste pipe arrangements.
  • Using a purpose-made shower screen to fit an awkward roof shape.
  • A roof window gives additional headroom above a bath or basin.
  • A WC placed at the gable end gives more headroom.
  • The corner bath. When building a new home there are lots of opportunities to incorporate sunken features working with rooms below (perhaps forming a cupboard etc.). The diagram shows a sunken corner bath, a shower base is also formed within the floor finish so there is no step up or down into a tray. An enclosure is created to accommodate the WC to give additional privacy and the basin is mounted on the dividing partition.
  • The central shower enclosure. A shower room with the shower used as a main focal feature. The shower is the Europa free standing enclosure by ShowerLux. It has no door and is surrounded by a 1900mm high curved glass screen. The room has been formed around the shower enclosure to enhance and present the unusual shape. The WC is back-to-back with another bathroom enabling both cisterns to be hidden within a duct.
  • A first floor extension to a small cottage. The before diagram shows a flat roof extension at ground floor level. The home owner wanted to provide a new master bedroom suite replacing the bathroom lost though forming a way through to the area to be used. The after illustration shows a new bedroom with ensuite bathroom immediately adjacent to a new bathroom serving the existing bedrooms. Bathrooms are kept on the north side of the building and adjacent to keep pipework simple and to connect up to existing drainage arrangements at ground level, Splayed access to the new bedroom helps to keep within existing available headroom.

    Useful tips:

  • Free standing period baths provide great design potential; if you have a large enough room consider twin wash hand basins.
  • At the drawing board stage make sure that cloakrooms are conveniently near main reception rooms (dining room, lounge, kitchen etc.) and fitted with an outside window.
  • It may be worth making a cloakroom large enough to become a future bathroom facility for a future ground floor granny annexe or as an extra bathroom for a growing family.
  • Family bathrooms are always popular and should be centrally located relative to bathroom accommodation.
  • Bathrooms and shower rooms can fit into extremely small spaces. Don’t forget the roof space.
  • Underfloor heating is an ideal comfort system of heating in a bathroom. Individual room systems can be installed underneath floors and within floor joist centres. Contacts see Chapter Eight.
