1. "We need more space" Remember there may be space in an existing house to provide an extra bedroom, bathroom, office, more storage space without the need for extending or moving. The roof is usually the first place to look ! Using the roof space. Roof windows below a sloping roof plane can provide working space at a desk or headroom above a WC or wash basin. Velux windows produce a roof window which opens up to form a balcony arrangement thus avoiding the need to build a proper dormer.
![]() Extending a chalet bungalow. (Pooh Corner in sectional elevation before & after). Useable first floor space is shown before and after an extension. By building on the side of a chalet bungalow a lot of eaves floor area was opened up and used as full height space. By pulling the garage gable forward the elevation works well and is broken up three dimensionally. Extending the roof of the garage down to a low level forms a lean-to for external storage such a logs etc.
![]() A bugalow extension and alteration to use existing restricted roof space. The plans show a ‘before and after’ situation. The result provides a more workable kitchen, a larger lounge / dining facility giving flexibility of use. It maintains 3 bedrooms using the roof space and provides a master suite on the ground floor. Because staircase only serves one bedroom it can be a relatively narrow width though don't forget the need to get furniture up to first floor level.
